Why Blog Posts are Important for SEO Marketing

Blog posts are a great source of interest and engagement – and also a very important factor in your SEO strategy, helping boost your results. SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), involves multiple factors that optimise your content in order to improve your organic rankings. When you regularly upload high quality blog posts to your website, you increase the chance of your audience finding you online. As well as benefiting your SEO strategy, a successful blog can also boost your brand awareness, create more leads and increase conversions.

You’re probably wondering: “how often should I upload a new blogpost?”

This is a question that carries an ongoing debate in the marketing world.

Whilst detailed and high-quality content always triumphs, it is important that you post your content on a regular basis. Try to post at least 1-3 new blog posts per week if you are looking to improve your SEO ranking.

Keyword Research

When it comes to blogging, there is no set list of keywords; it depends entirely on what your audience is searching for. In fact, the term “keyword” can be slightly confusing, as most of the time – they are usually phrases. “How to get more Instagram followers” or “Best marketing agencies in London” are both good examples of what a consumer may be searching for on Google.

The task is to identify keywords and phrases that your target market is searching for and create content around those terms.

However, the process isn’t quite as simple as merely checking which phrases receive the most traffic and diving straight in. The majority of the most popular keywords in your industry will be extremely competitive and may decrease your chances of ranking in the top search results. This is where you need to delve deeper into your keyword research and look for specific topics that your audience is asking about. If used effectively, keywords are a great way to help boost your page rankings and increase the number of clicks on your listing.

Before you begin, it’s always a good idea to understand who you are specifically targeting – also known as your buyer persona. Once you understand who you are writing for, it becomes much easier to frame your blog posts in SEO.

Data from your website can give you a real insight into the type of people that are interested in your content and with Google Analytics, you are able to see the search terms that have already brought some traffic to your site.

Once you have a clear idea of who you are targeting your blogs to, you need to generate a list of around 10 topics related to your industry or niche.  These should be ‘umbrella’ topic ideas that have lots of mini subjects within and will be a great starting point when choosing your keywords.

For example, at our digital marketing agency, Social Chameleon, we listed some topics that our target market may be searching for:

  • Social media marketing
  • Email marketing
  • SEO marketing
  • Facebook adverts

Once you have a clear idea of the topics that are important to your consumer, it’s time to break them down and identify keywords that fall into each category.

You can use keyword research tools such as Ahrefs and Ubersuggest to help you come up with more keyword ideas to optimise your blog posts for SEO. They will also help you identify specific phrases that your audience is searching for, with the aim to find an ‘exact match’. This will help your business climb the organic search results for queries related to your blog, as Google can see that you are answering the question directly.

A very simple way to find related keywords is using the Google search method. You need to search for your primary topic or keyword and scroll right down to the bottom where you will find a “searches related to” section.

Google provides you with a list of similar searches that may help your consumer find what they are looking for. Usually, these are terms that are searched for frequently –  a useful way of finding suggestions for potentially related keywords.

Using Competitor Research to Find Relevant Topics

This is a creative way to uncover new and trending content ideas that other businesses may not be taking advantage of. It also helps you to identify the themes and blogging formats that work well in your industry, that you can replicate to optimise your blogs for SEO.

Knowing the keywords and content that is bringing your competitors vast amounts of traffic will be very valuable for your business. By simply Googling some of your primary keywords, you are able to see what positions your competitors are in.

If your competitor is ranking for certain keywords that you have identified, you should subsequently continue optimising this and improving your SERPS (Search Engine Results Page ranking).

However, it is also just as important to spot which keywords your competitors haven’t yet targeted, using this as an opportunity to get your own share of the market’s organic traffic.

If you are looking for a quicker way to check up on your competitors, Ahrefs allows users to run a limited number of searches that will show you the top-ranking keywords for the domain that you search for. This is a great way to get a feel for the types of keywords and phrases that your competitors are targeting and benefiting from.

How to Track Progress

Organic traffic is the number of visitors that your site receives through organic search engine rankings. Organic search traffic is what every business wants because essentially, it’s free and most importantly, it’s targeted. The people clicking your link will have most likely searched for something relevant to your business and service, so if you can provide a solution you will have a great chance of securing a new customer. It’s also an effective indicator of your SEO strategy success and if your blog posts are working effectively in relation to SEO.  An improvement in your website’s organic traffic means that your keyword ranking has gone up and increased your visibility, meaning you are ranking higher for related search terms.

Your search engine visibility measures how many people see your website through organic search results. Tools such as Ahrefs’ Position Tracking Tool allow businesses to check on their search rankings and identify areas or keywords that need extra attention.
